Have you ever wondered what Chinese people eat for breakfast? I’ll give you a hint – not sandwiches. Every morning you can see vendors opening their steamy stands for business. That’s the place to look for an answer...
Baozi (包子) is a Chinese name for steamed buns. It’s a kind of traditional Chinese fast food. You can buy them from street vendors or small shops at practically every street corner. Most commonly (although not exclusively) they are meant for breakfast (watered down with a cup of soy milk). They’re very cheap and tasty. Usual cost varies from 1-5 RMB depending on the place (more pricy in big cities), size and stuffing. They come with a variety of flavors (can be sweet or salty). Typical fillings are: pork, beef, mutton, chicken, duck, vegetables, sweet bean paste or egg pudding. My personal choice would be pork (for salty stuffing) and egg pudding (for the sweet one).
Try yourself. Baozi is always a safe choice when you don’t know what to eat. I’m pretty sure that even people not very fond of Chinese cuisine will find them tasty.
Bon appetite!
