You enjoy your holidays in El Nido. Since possibility to eat different kinds of food is one of the greatest pleasures of traveling, you’re looking around to try something new. Right now you have this huge craving for something sweet. You look at the desserts in the menu of the nearest restaurant. There is one mysterious that catches your eye. ‘Halo-Halo’ – with the name that tells you absolutely nothing about the nature of this dessert, you have no other choice as to call a waitress and ask her directly what that thing really is…
Halo-halo – in Tagalog literally means ‘Mix-Mix’. It’s a typical Filipino milk dessert served in a tall glass. It has various fruits, jelly, sweet bean etc. placed at the bottom. Over this colourful hodgepodge there is a layer of shaved ice where evaporated milk (or coconut milk) was poured. There usually is an ice-cream topping. How to eat it? MIX everything and enjoy! Despite unusual look it has surprisingly nice and mildly sweet taste. To beat summer heat this unique mixture of flavors and textures makes a wonderful (and relatively cheap – 70 PHP) alternative for traditional ice-cream. Try for yourself!
